Return to League action for Women’s teams

The Women’s League returns this upcoming Monday night at 6:30pm.

Unfortunately, Newbuildings are not taking part in this new round of fixtures, since they have not played a match this entire season. We wish them all the best, and hope that they can slowly rebuild and get back to the pitch for the 2020 season.

The Bready army will travel to Strabane Park to face the Saints on Monday. Despite beating Megan’s Moorehead’s team at the very start of the season, both teams now have 4 points apiece. Since they have narrowly missed out playing at the cup final, both are looking to claw their way to the top of the league.

Elsewhere, the Foxies once again host Burndennett at home. Burndennett are currently at the top of the table, but lost out to Foxlodge in the semi-final of the cup last week. Will this game go the same way, or will Burndennett put another feather in their cap?

The final game has been postponed as Eglinton prepare the ground for this weeks Senior Cup Final, Killyclooney will make the trek to Eglinton at a later date. Both teams are tied at the bottom of the league. But will Killyclooney’s newfound confidence as cup finalists help boost team morale and allow them to beat Eglinton once again?

Kit Boost For Womens Cricket in NWCU

New Kit For Womens Clubs

North west womens kit bagsOver the past few weeks, the staff in the North West Cricket Union have been travelling round all of the womens clubs in the North West to deliver new team kit bags.

The funding for these bags has come from a joint project between The Derry Midweek League and the North West Active Clubs officer, to develop women and girls cricket in the North West. The program has been running over the winter months, providing coaching to schools, clubs and the North West women and girls teams. There has also been coach education, mentoring and accreditation of female coaches in the North West.

“It was fantastic to get this grant from Sport Northern Ireland, enabling us to provide more opportunities for women and girls to take part in cricket at all level than there has been before.” Said a Derry Midweek Spokesperson

The grant of over £9000 was applied for through the Derry Midweek League, and administered by North West/Cricket Ireland staff, to develop women and girls cricket across the North West.

“It’s fantastic news and will help us attract new members and hopefully new teams as interest in the sport continues to develop,” said a NW Ladies spokesperson.”

Each kits bag contains bats, pads, gloves, helmets and wicket keeping equipment to enable women and girls teams to take part in cricket without the need to have their own equipment.

“After speaking to the womens clubs at the forums held over the winter, it was raised regularly that very few of the players had their own kits and were therefore borrowing club kits…many of which are old mens kits and not fit for purpose. Being mens kits, most of the kits did not fit properly.

The grant only had enough funding for 6 kits originally, however, through assistance from the North West, we were able to purchase two more to ensure that all the clubs had kit” Said NWCU Active Clubs Coordinator

North West Women record Another Win Over Dublin Side

The NW Women recorded another win against Leinster CC in their T20 encounter at Burndennett.

Jemma Rankin’s fluent unbeaten 41 helped the NW post 111 for 4. Rankin’s powerful hitting included 6 boundaries and reinforced her reputation as a powerful all-rounder worthy of higher recognition.

Hazel Magee (25), Julie Logue (15*), and Sarah Black (11) all reached double figures, while Nulty (2-29), McLoughlin (1-6), and Livingstone (1-13) were the successful bowlers for Leinster.

In reply, Leinster never threatened to chase down the target, being dismissed for 59.

That was due to an excellent bowling display, backed up by an energetic and athletic display in the field.

Bready’s Vanessa Buchanan and Eglinton’s Zara Craig picked up four wickets apiece in a superb display as the NW sealed an emphatic 52 runs win.

Coach Martin Deans reflected on an excellent pre-season work out for his side saying, “On behalf of the North West Ladies I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Leinster Cricket Club and coach Rob O’Connor for providing excellent opposition over the past two days.

“We wish them all the best for the coming season. Also many thanks to Declan McGettigan and Burndennett Cricket Club for their hospitality over the two days. To the ground staff, Jackie Brown and Gerry Pollock for all their hard work over the past week in testing weather conditions, and to umpires Davy Caldwell, Alan Dunn and Robert Donnell. Finally to the tea ladies who did an excellent job looking after both teams and all the travelling supporters.”

North West Women Win Game 1 Vs Leinster CC

NW Women Vs Leinster CC 1The NW Women’s team got their season off to a winning start with a hard-fought win over Leinster CC at a blustery and bitterly cold Burndennett.

Batting first Leinster got off to a strong start with Irish internationals Amy Kenealy and Rebecca Rolfe sharing an opening stand of 59.

The introduction of Vanessa Buchanan brought immediate rewards as she had Rolfe stumped by the impressive Julie Logue for 17, and then trapped Kenealy lbw for a top score of 31.

Her Bready team mate Stephanie Wilkinson then produced a wonderful spell to put the NW on top, claiming 3 for 19 as a youthful Leinster went from 59 for 0 to 96 for 7.

Vanessa Kaleda hit an unbeaten 18, and Ellen Ridgeway made 15 as Leinster finished on 116 for 7.

The feeling at the half-way stage was that the score was about par, but the NW opening pairing of Julie Logue and Emma Allen set about their task with relish.

Former international Logue delighted the home crowd with three consecutive boundaries as she and Allen started the chase positively.

Logue had reached 23 when she was attempted one big hit too many and was bowled by Mary-Kate McLoughlin.

Allen (25) and Angie Porter (15) took the score to 76 for 1, and a comfortable win looked on the cards.

However Vanessa Kaleda had other ideas as she bowled with pace and control to take 3 for 14, and suddenly the NW were wobbling.

However, helped by the cool head of Amy Caufield (18*), and a number of extras, the NW secured a four-wicket win.

The sides are back in action today at the same venue in a T20 contest – action at Burndennett gets under way at 1.30pm

North West Womens Indoor Training Starts

Indoor Training Starts for Women

North West Womens Indoor CricketThe North West Cricket Union are pleased to have the Ladies league pre-season training underway early with a welcome to indoor cricket sessions at Artigarvan Hall.

There are two sessions that take place every Monday evening, the first session is from 6pm to 7pm and will only be for those under 17 and will be a mixture of fun games and drills.

These sessions will run until easter as we will be going into schools to do girls only cricket from now until easter. The second slot is open for all players of any age, although we mainly see this for those that play senior cricket in the coming season.

This will take place straight after from 7-9pm. The sessions will feature different just games, one to one training and mini tournament. For each evening there is a small cost of £1.

Cricket Ireland/North West Coaches, Brian Allen, Gary McDaid and Colin Manson take the sessions. The purpose of the sessions is to help ladies develop more skills and technique before the ladies league gets underway in April.

One of the Coaches, Gary McDaid said,

“It is brilliant to see such a high interest in winter training as before ladies would tend to lose interest after their last game of the season. I look forward to helping develop the techniques of the ladies to ensure we have more of a competitive league and so we can compete with the standard of ladies in the NCU and Leinster.

Myself, Brian and Colin are delighted to be able to support these sessions and have the backing of the NWCU and also all the ladies involved. The effort that goes into all involved is outstanding. I look forward to see what the 2017 season has install for the ladies of the North West.’’
