Warriors start T20 Festival with impressive win

The North West Warriors got their IPT20 campaign off to a flying start this afternoon with a ‘bonus point’ win over hosts Munster Reds at The Mardyke.

Boyd Rankin’s charges were in control most of the way after winning the toss and opting to bowl first in ideal conditions on Leeside.

Nicolaj Damgaard took 14 from Scott Macbeth’s first over but that was to be as good as it got for the Cork side. At the other end, Ryan Macbeth removed former Warrior Nathan McGuire with his very first delivery and then Murray Commins with his fifth before handing over the baton to Trent McKeegan.

The Newbuildings bowler’s first went for five ‘wides’ but he wasn’t long in re-setting the radar- having Damgaard caught by William McClintock with his next.

McKeegan went on to claim superb figures of 4-24 and despite cameos from Gareth Delany (28) and Liam McCarthy (22), the North West side will have been delighted to restrict the Reds to 120 all out.

It was a solid bowling performance overall, but with McKeegan, Cian Robertson (2-17) and Ryan Macbeth (2-18) particularly impressive.

Early wickets for McCarthy (2-26) and Josh Manley gave Munster a semblance of hope at the start of the reply, however 21 from Jared Wilson and an unbroken 54-run partnership between Brigade pair Scott Macbeth (40*) and Cameron Melly (30*) soon put paid to that.

Scotty’s knock came off 24 balls and included 5 fours and a six while Melly faced just 13 for his with 4 fours and 2 sixes as the Warriors won comfortably.

Next up for Shane Getkate’s side is another early start on Wednesday (11am) when they take on Leinster Lightning.
