Warriors Name Squad for Lightning Clash

Head Coach Gary Wilson has unveiled his first competitive North West Warriors squad ahead of Saturday’s trip to Pembroke to take on reigning IP cup holders, Leinster Lightning.

The Warriors Selectors have named a 13-man panel for the game including debutants Stephen Doheny and Shane Getkate but once again there is a strong “local” flavour with nine of the squad having come through the underage set-up here plus Glendermott’s new signing, Nathan McGuire. Doheny will strengthen a top order that struggled in the last couple of seasons while Getkate adds real options with both bat and ball.

There will be plenty delighted to see William McClintock back in the fold too with Wilson having recently described the Donemana man as “…a clean a hitter of a ball as you’re likely to see.” The 24-year old seems to have found a new lease of life of late and similar comments might also apply to Stuart Thompson. The former Eglinton man struggled for form in a truncated 2020 season but is a player of the highest quality when he’s on his game.

Conor Olphert caught the attention of many onlookers at the back end of the last Interpro series and he could spearhead an attack of current and former Bready players alongside Craig Young and Boyd Rankin. Once again Andy McBrine skippers the Warriors side who will be hoping for a bright start under their new regime.

Warriors Head Coach, Gary Wilson, expressed his excitement for the game:

“We are all very excited to get the competition underway after a busy pre-season. The support in the past month from Bready and Eglinton to provide training wickets for us has been really appreciated by myself and the players.

The guys have been playing very well in training and everyone will be heading into the weekend with confidence. There is certainly competition for places within the team and I believe we have picked a balanced squad for the game.”
