Warriors name 12-man senior squad

The North West Warriors have named their 12-man senior squad for the 2022 campaign as Head Coach Gary Wilson looks to build on his impressive first season in the new role.

The former Ireland wicket-keeper/batsman has been a breath of fresh air since arriving in the region, ably assisted by the likes of William Porterfield and Boyd Rankin who are both now an integral part of the Warriors structure.

Success in last year’s Interprovincial T20 Cup was fitting reward for an excellent summer, meaning it is no surprise to see the vast majority of that squad retain their places. Ross Allen, who has moved to live and work in England, is the most obvious absentee and the left arm spinner will certainly be missed.

Andy McBrine retains the captain’s armband and what a ‘winter’ it has been for the Donemana all-rounder who is now in the Top 10 of the world’s ODI bowlers. The skipper is likely to retain his Number 3 spot in the order behind Porterfield and Stephen Doheny and ahead of what looks to be a strong middle and lower order.

William McClintock, who now boasts 5 Ireland caps to his name, is included in the 12 alongside Jared Wilson and Ryan Macbeth, who all impressed selectors at both club and interprovincial level last season.

Craig Young, Graham Hume, Conor Olphert and Ryan Macbeth are all contenders for the new ball, with the Donegal man’s season starting early this year as Brigade head to Spain next month to play in the European Cricket League.

Speaking this weekend, ‘Turf’ insisted he was looking forward to a busy year and said the Warriors squad had already been hard at work preparing for the new season.

“We’ve been back in training for a while now and everybody is looking forward to getting started. The structure is really good- Gary has changed things around since he came in and he has made a real difference.”

“For me personally, working with Boyd (Rankin) has been amazing. Everybody knows how good he is and what he has achieved and it has been brilliant to work with someone with that experience.”

“The morale in the squad is first class too. You look around and see people of the quality of Gary, Boyd and William (Porterfield) and see players like Andy (McBrine) showing how good they are; it’s impossible not to take confidence from that.”

“It will be a long season but I’m looking forward to the European League coming up with the Brigade lads and keeping working hard in training ahead of the new season.”

“That’s what it’s all about for me- if you put in the hard work, the results will come.”

The Warriors squad in full is-

Andy McBrine (capt); Stephen Doheny, William Porterfield, Graham Kennedy, Shane Getkate, William McClintock, Nathan McGuire, Graham Hume, Jared Wilson, Craig Young, Conor Olphert and Ryan Macbeth.
