Warriors announce T20 Squad

The North West Warriors have announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming Test Triangle Interprovincial T20 Blitz which gets under way this weekend at Pembroke.

The squad has been increased numerically given that several players have prior commitments on one or other of the days as the Warriors prepare to face the Northern Knights on Saturday, Leinster Lightning on Sunday and finally the Munster Reds on Monday morning. There are two new faces in the squad with Eglinton’s Tommy Orr and something of surprise addition in Carrickfergus wicketkeeper, Max Burton.

Marshall Kilgore, Chair of Selectors, outlined the reasons behind the inclusion of Burton saying

“Andrew Austin is still managing his injury and isn’t ready to return to the squad yet. With Marcus Poskitt also unavailable we have selected Brendan Louw in recent games. Brendan has come in, integrated with the squad really well and helped maintain the quality we expect at this level. He has club commitments this weekend though and understandably is not available for selection.”

As a Union we are mindful of the need to develop players for both interprovincial and international cricket. Therefore looking ahead to the upcoming Ireland U19 World Cup Qualifiers we looked at the wicketkeepers within that squad and if this provided an opportunity to aid their preparations. Neil Rock is already playing for the Knights and Marcus Poskitt remains unavailable, so we felt it was a good chance to give valuable game-time to Max in the run up to the World Cup qualifiers.”

Head Coach, McGregor, welcomed the addition of another promising young player to the squad in Eglinton’s Tommy Orr.

“The selectors are constantly looking at the succession planning within the squad and are identifying the players coming through our club game who have the potential to succeed at Warriors level. That has been evidenced in the recent selections of Kyle Magee and Greg McFaul for the Warriors, together with the Emerging Squad selections.”

“With that in mind, Tommy Orr, our U-17 Warriors wicketkeeper, has also been included in the squad for Saturday’s game however he is unavailable for Sunday and Monday. Tommy has impressed in recent weeks for Eglinton and this will be another key step in his development.”
