Sion claim League 2 Cup success

Simon Galloway looked a very happy man on Saturday afternoon as he picked up the League 2 Cup for Sion Mills after a 5-wicket win over Newbuildings IIs at Burndennett.

It has been far from plain sailing for the Tyrone side in the past few years so no-one will deny them this win which came courtesy of a solid all-round performance over the two days.

Sion took a 69-run lead into the second innings, however Newbuildings didn’t need a lot of time to knock off the deficit as Pushpender Singh clubbed 5 fours and 5 sixes in his 34-ball 62 at the start of the day.

Singh and Leeroy McKeegan put on 77 for the first wicket in just 10 overs to really open the match back up; however once Sion broke through, they grabbed the contest by the scruff of the neck.

From 77-0, Newbuildings were all out for 145- Jason Bell with 10 the only player to reach double figures apart from the openers.

Lee Finlay helped himself to 4-41- figures that along with his batting on Friday were to see him named man-of-the-match.

Andy Lucas (2-11), Barry Scott (2-26) and Glen McCallan (2-47) tidied up the rest as Sion were set a target of 77 to claim the trophy.

Skipper Galloway gave his side a good start with 4 fours in his 21 with Lucas adding 16, Finlay 15 and Rian McKelvey 14 as they held their nerve to win.

McCallan- another real stalwart at the club- fittingly hit the winning runs as the Sion party got under way.
