“Sal” helping keep Burndennett flag flying
Most observers felt that Ardmore and Fox Lodge would have the Championship promotion race to themselves this season, however as the teams head into the half-way stage of their league campaign it is Burndennett who sit proudly on top of the pile.
Mark Mooney’s team have been excellent in winning all six of their league outings to date although their mettle will certainly be tested tomorrow when the Foxies come calling.
Obviously one person can’t win those games on their own, but there is no doubting the impact Salman Ahmed has made since arriving at the Tyrone club in April. The Indian all-rounder likes to play on the front foot for sure, and he has an unbeaten century against the Bleachgreen club already to his name, however he is also making major strides for them with the ball.
Against Newbuildings last weekend he changed the entire complexion of the game with a match-winning 6-22 and Burndennett will be hoping that he can keep that momentum going into the second half of the season.
‘Dennett have never played in the top flight of North West cricket although they did come close in 2014 when losing out in the title race to St Johnston on the final day of the season.
Maybe it just wasn’t their time because the Premier Division can be an extremely unforgiving place if you’re not ready.
If the team, and indeed Salman Ahmed can hold their nerve for another 8 weeks however, they might well get a crack at it sooner rather than later.
