Saints move top with win in the Park

St Johnston have gone top of the Long’s SuperValu Section 2 table after an impressive win over Strabane at the Park on Sunday.

Graeme McCarter set the tone for the day as he removed both skipper Kevin Gallagher and overseas man Nasir Nawar very early in the piece and the Red Caps never recovered from that. Aaron Gillespie threatened briefly, but once he went for 26, the Saints took care of the lower order without much fuss as the hosts could only muster 89 all out.

McCarter bowled one ball short of his allotted 8 overs to finish with 3-9 while Sayed Shirzad (3-11) and Michael Rankin 2-23 tidied up for the Donegal outfit.

Some mid-innings rain saw the visitors’ target set at 86 from 37 overs but it was all academic as Jack Macbeth’s 41 not out (6 fours) sealed the verdict with nearly 20 overs to spare.

Nawar (2-16) was the pick of Strabane’s bowling on a disappointing day for them.

The day’s other game was washed out after Fox Lodge had reached 146-2 in the 24th over at Ballyspallen. Charlie Simpson made 66 and Gayan Maneeshan was unbeaten on 52 before the rain arrived and put paid to any hopes of a result.
