Red Caps Claim Eric Cooke Cup

Ryan Gallagher produced a superb Man of the Match display as Strabane beat near neighbours Fox Lodge by 38 runs in the Eric Cooke final at Strabane Park on Friday night. Gallagher top scored with an unbeaten 41, clearing the ropes three times as the Red Caps posted 127 for 6 in their 20 overs.

Skipper Aaron Gillespie hit six boundaries in a quickfire 34, while there were a few lusty blows late on from Rhys Logue and Mark McNulty. Jamie McIntyre (2-21) and Adam Walker (2-23) picked up two wickets apiece, while Johnny Robinson (1-18), Levi Kerr (1-30) and skipper Aaron Heywood each claimed one.

The Fox Lodge batting without Brian Allen looked fragile, and that’s how it played out, as Gallagher (3-9) removed openers TJ Nicholl and Johnny Robinson cheaply.

The Strabane quartet of spinners kept a tight grip on the chase, with the Ballymagorry side never threatening to break the stranglehold. Leg-spinner Tanvir Hassan conceded just 10 runs in his four overs, while Rhys Logue, Kushpal Singh and Tom Harpur also bowled well.

Craig Doherty top scored with 31 before becoming the third of Gallagher’s victims, while there were also double figure contributions from Aidan Logue (24*) and Johnny Heywood (18).

Strabane in the end ran out comfortable 38-run winners as Fox Lodge finished on 89 for five.
