NWCU Launch ‘Smash It Cricket’
The NWCU is launching an exciting new initiative with the aim of getting more 5-9 year old’s playing cricket across the region.
Recognising the needs to develop cricket at grassroots level and to help the future of junior cricket, the NWCU has created ‘Smash It Cricket’. It aims to inspire 5 to 9 year old boys and girls to take up cricket and join their local club!
Cricket Development Officer, Brian Allen, outlined the reasons for the new programme:
We are excited to launch “Smash It Cricket” in the North West as a new opportunity for girls and boys in the North West to get involved in cricket at a younger age. The program will cover the fundamentals of movement, encourage problem solving and communication that will help the overall development of each child.
The kids all get their own bat, ball, stumps and bag when they register so they have everything they need to try the game for the first time! I’d encourage parents to register and we promise a fun action-packed summer of cricket.
It also provides a chance for parents to get involved by helping with the activity “homework” and making use of the appropriately sized kit that each player gets to keep. I feel this is a real opportunity to provide children with a fun introduction to sport whilst laying the foundations for physical competence and a lifelong involvement in sport.
The initial launch of the programme will see 4 centre locations around the North West, with each hosting their own ‘Smash It’ sessions. The cost is £25 per child and will include their own kit bag to keep complete with cricket equipment worth over £20.
