NW Warriors start IP50 programme with Knights defeat

The North West Warriors were unable to follow up Wednesday’s thrilling victory over the Northern Knights on Wednesday as Andy McBrine’s men fell to a 118-run defeat to the NCU side at Stormont this afternoon.

A 70-run partnership between Ruhan Pretorius and Tyron Koen (32) helped the home side recover from 117-6 at the midway point of their innings after James McCollum (33) and Sam Topping (29) fared best of the top order.

Pretorius pressed the accelerator in the last few overs to finish on 81 which, aided and abetted by a wasteful 50 ‘extras’ from the Warriors, allowed the Knights to post 244 all out in the end.

Harry Zimmermann (3-40), skipper McBrine (2-27), Scott Macbeth (2-35) and Ryan Macbeth (2-48) were best with the ball for the Warriors whose reply got off to an horrendous start.

Early wickets for Matthew Foster (3-12) and Pretorius (2-12) saw the visitors reduced to 21-5 and the outcome was never in doubt after that.

Shane Getkate (66 not out) tried to resist as best he could but only Jared Wilson (18) and Cameron Melly (16) made it to double figures apart from that.

Koen (3-27) tidied up at the end to ensure a comfortable win for his side as the Knights started the 50-over series with real intent.
