Maghera CC host impressive ‘Festival of Cricket’
Maghera CC began their 10th anniversary celebrations at the start of April by hosting a ‘Festival of Cricket’ at the impressive Meadowbank Sports Arena.
While the emphasis was very much on fun, the club are clearly intent on building on an impressive decade as part of the NWCU and are looking ahead to entering teams in the Youth and Girls leagues in the near future.
A wide range of age groups were catered for on the day, with the focus on social cricket, junior cricket as well as ‘Smash It’ cricket showcase coaching and ‘Smash It’ activator training.
The club posted on the success of the event on their own Facebook page after the event and are confident that they can build on the results going forward. Their statement commented-
“This was by far the biggest event Maghera Cricket Club has been a part of, but we are so proud of the results. We had over 110 people enjoying cricket, more than 5 hours of coaching, 15 matches played, hundreds of pounds raised for charity and 5 cakes eaten!
“The first Mid-Ulster festival of cricket was a massive success and we’d like to thank the main organiser and brains behind the festival Geoff Burns, whose passion for sport and coaching is inspirational and we are so lucky to have him at our club.
“Thanks also to Brian Allen & Ryan Clarke from NWCU for coming down and coaching our juniors and seniors so well, and to Cricket Ireland and Conor Olphert for coming down and spending time with our players.
“We are grateful to Erne Community CC, Ballymena CC, Dungannon CC and Magherafelt Titans Basketball Club for participating in the tournament and to all members of Maghera CC for volunteering at the various stations.
“Obviously we are indebted to Mid Ulster District Council for funding support and Meadowbank Sports Arena for facilitating us and indeed to everyone who came down to be part of the day.
“Finally, great credit must go to Geoff and Alan Burns who were the driving force behind the initiative in memory of their late parents. They can be wholly satisfied with the outcome on Saturday evening with many happy, exhausted but satisfied figures leaving the arena.”
Congratulations to all involved in the event and we look forward to following your progress in the coming seasons.
