Hunter Hundred sends Newbuildings into cup semi-finals

A superb Ryan Hunter century sent Newbuildings into the semi-finals of the Sports Hub North West senior cup on Sunday courtesy of a 35-run victory over Ballyspallen in a cracking contest at Foyleview Arena.

The ties weren’t scheduled to take place until 18 June, however with the Roe Valley side still in the National Cup, they will be on the road that weekend, so this one was brought forward to accommodate their travel arrangements.

A century second-wicket partnership between Hunter and his former Brigade team-mate Gareth McKeegan set Newbuildings on their way in the tie and the visitors always faced an uphill battle after that.

McKeegan made a very attacking 60 (10 fours, 2 sixes) but even that was dwarfed by Hunter’s knock of 155, made from 140 balls and containing 19 fours and 4 ‘maximums’.

Jordan McCorkell chipped in with 24, Jared Wilson 17 and Ross Dougherty 15 as the hosts set a target of 322-7 in their 50 overs.

Stuart Kennedy (3-61) and Stephen Kennedy (2-46) were best with the ball for ‘Spallen.

Anyone thinking Ballyspallen would just roll over was in for a shock as Demith Perera then led a brilliant fightback.

The Sri Lankan played the lead role as he and James Thompson (25) shared a 135-run stand for the fifth wicket that quietened the home support deep into the afternoon.

Ross Dougherty it was who finally broke the shackles- having Perera caught by Jared Wilson for a superb 149 (23 fours, 5 sixes).

The game was up after that despite Jacob Logan-Wilson making 36 and Stuart Kennedy 26- the last four wickets falling for just 13 runs.

Jared Wilson (5-55) claimed the bowling honours with Jordan Wilson and Ross Dougherty’s two wickets each also proving vital.

Supporters will be hoping that the other three ties can provide as much entertainment as this one.
