First round draws completed for Senior Cups

The first round draws in both the men’s and women’s senior cup competitions were made on Monday with some entertaining ties to look forward to at the start of the new season.

In the Sports Hub men’s competition, holders Brigade have been handed a tricky start to their defence as they travel to Donegal to take on St Johnston.

The Saints have recorded wins over the Beechgrove side in both the league and cup in the past couple of seasons and they will be relishing the visit of Andy Britton’s team first up.

Fox Lodge, who won the trophy in 2022, will entertain Coleraine in another very difficult game to call. The Bannsiders only just edged their hosts out of the top eight last season and this is sure to be a keenly-contested affair at Ballymagorry.

League champions Ardmore will be favourites at home to Burndennett while Newbuildings and Bready have drawn a couple of potential banana-skin ties against Strabane and Bonds Glen respectively.

Ballyspallen were first out of the hat against neighbours Eglinton while last year’s surprise package Killyclooney entertain Glendermott.

The Nedd will be absolutely delighted with their first senior cup appearance in many years after the Ballykelly outfit were paired at home to serial cup winners, Donemana.

With seven teams competing for the women’s trophy, top seeds Bready have received a ‘bye’ into the semi-finals.

Holders Fox Lodge will be bidding for a sixth cup win in seven years when they entertain Bonds Glen while Eglinton will be hoping to make home advantage count as Newbuildings arrive at the village for their opening tie.

Coleraine also impressed last season and the Bannsiders make the journey to Strabane Park as they aim to secure the remaining semi-final spot.

The first round ties in the women’s cup will be played on Sunday 19 May and in an exciting development for this competition, matches will be 30-overs a side for the first time.
