Fingers crossed ahead of busy league and cup weekend

It could be a case of all eyes skyward this weekend as a mixture of league and cup competitions are played out across the region over the next few days. On Saturday the Long’s SuperValu leagues move into the second of four rounds of matches before the quarter finals of the Senior Cup and Sam Jeffrey Shield claim centre stage the following day.

It isn’t very often that a Donemana v Brigade joust plays second fiddle on the fixture list, and while Saturday’s game at the Holm is unlikely to be any less intense than normal, it’s probably fair to suggest that the Newbuildings v Bready game may have a bit more bearing on the grander scheme of things.

The Magheramason men currently lead the table ahead of Eglinton, with Ardmore and Newbuildings making up the top four. A win for Davy Scanlon’s team on Saturday would really tee them up for the last couple of games however should Newbuildings claim the points, that would bring them, and the other pair, who incidentally also play each other, right back into it.

Donemana are only 4 points off the top four themselves and victory over the old foe would also keep their chances alive.

Bonds Glen v Burndennett is one of Saturday’s three Championship games that also sees Glendermott entertain Killyclooney while Ballyspallen head to Donegal to take on the Saints.

On Sunday it is all about the cups with last weekend’s four senior quarter-finals along with the Sammy Jeffrey ties down for decision. Ballyspallen and Bonds Glen look to be up against it as they take on Bready and Eglinton respectively although cup cricket has provided more than one shock in the past.

Despite the cup pedigree of Donemana, and indeed Brigade, neither will have been too enamoured with their last-eight draws. The holders are off to Foyleview- a venue where they lost heavily on a recent visit- although Newbuildings will be expecting a very different type of animal on Sunday.

Brigade won’t get it their own way against in-form Ardmore either, especially at the Bleachgreen. Those two games have the potential to be fantastic cup ties and we really could do with the weather holding for them.

In the Sam Jeffrey, Strabane v Coleraine looks the tie of the round while St Johnston v The Nedd will definitely be the best craic.

Fox Lodge will be marginal favourites on the very short trip to Burndennett while Glendermott could have enough about them to get past Killyclooney.
