Expanded Role for Ian McGregor

At the recent NWCU AGM, it was announced that Ian McGregor is set to take on an expanded coaching and talent development role in the Warriors set-up. McGregor has been Head Coach of the North West Warriors since 2015 and during his tenure, the Warriors have seen considerable improvement including an Interprovincial Championship-winning campaign last year.

In addition to his Head Coach role, McGregor will now be tasked with bringing on the next generation of talent in the North West with an extended Emerging Warriors programme and providing coaching support to the Regional Development Squads for both boys and girls teams.

Announcing the new position, Peter McCartney, NWCU General Manager, was delighted with the appointment.

Over the last number of years, Ian has been fantastic not just in his Warriors role but also with the Ireland U19’s and Academy. The new expanded role will allow us to increase our coaching contact time, not just with our established Warriors players but also the Emerging squads. Ian will also offer support and guidance to our excellent coaches in the boys and girls Regional Development Squads.

As a Union, we have a clear strategy to develop and provide opportunities to our homegrown talent and the expansion of Ian’s role will significantly add to our existing programmes.

In the past 2 years we have completely overhauled our talent development programme and this appointment is a key milestone along the way. We have quality coaches and support staff throughout the system and we now have an environment that allows players to reach their representative and international ambitions right here in the Union.
