Eglinton and Strabane post Monday night wins

The top two in the Women’s Premier League weren’t in action on Monday night with Bready’s game against Coleraine scheduled for Wednesday this week, while it was Fox Lodge’s turn to sit it out as the second half of the season got under way.

That allowed third placed Bonds Glen and fourth placed Eglinton to try to close the gap and it was the villagers who came out on top with a 10-wicket win that saw them leap-frog the Bee Gees into third.

Buoyed by the return of Zara Craig for the first time this season, and with Jenni Jackson back from her Ireland under-19 stint against Jersey, Eglinton were bang on form at Kildoag this evening.

Batting first, the home side made 88-8 with Karen Haslett unbeaten on 21 at the top of the scoring charts.

Rosie McHugh (3-18), Zara (2-14) and Lauren Whiteside (2-16) all bowled well for the visitors who never lost a wicket in chasing down the target.

Arianna McKenna was unbeaten on 46 and Jenni 33* as Eglinton climbed into the top three.

Strabane recovered quickly from their cup reverse at Fox Lodge on Sunday to record a morale-boosting 44-run win at Newbuildings.

Skipper Chloe Deans anchored the Red Caps’ inning with a well made 36* although Saffarah Mitchell (3-20) bowled very well for the home team. Ella Watson (2-16), Poppy Miller (2-19) and Beth McIvor (2-22) were also among the wickets, but the Strabane bowlers were well on top in the second innings.

Saffarah top scored for Newbuildings but it was Aimee-le Finlay (3-8), Nicola Mullen (3-10) and Chloe (2-14) who had the final say as the hosts were all out for 56.
