Doheny stars as Warriors start with a win

The North West Warriors got off to a flying start in the first of this season’s T20 Festivals as a solid bowling display, followed by an excellent knock from Stephen Doheny, saw Boyd Rankin’s charges post a 7-wicket win over the Northern Knights at Comber.

The visitors gave a first competitive Interpro start to Trent McKeegan and while the Newbuildings youngster bowled well for his 1-17, it was Graham Hume who once again led the line to great effect.

The former Coleraine man picked up 3-29 from his 4 overs- including getting rid of Ruhan Pretorius for 40 just as he had started to look threatening.

Pretorius and Mark Adair (39) enjoyed a 65-run stand off just 38 deliveries that had threatened to see the Knights go big, but once Hume and Andy McBrine (1-27) had removed both set batsmen, the Warriors took the game by the scruff of the neck.

Conor Olphert (2-23) again looked right at home at this level as cameos from Max Burton (22) and Jeremy Lawlor (17) saw the hosts restricted to 149-8 from their 20.

Doheny and Nathan McGuire put the foot down early in reply- adding 34 in less than 5 overs before the Glendermott man fell to Josh Manley for 14. Jared Wilson added 22 before Doheny and skipper McBrine (28 not out) sealed an emphatic win.

The wicketkeeper/batsman’s unbeaten 74 came off just 49 deliveries and included 5 fours and 5 sixes as he helped give his side a great start to the weekend.

Next up for the Warriors is Leinster Lightning at 11am tomorrow where they will be hoping to continue this good run of form.
