Brigade, Fox Lodge claim DML Charity Cup success

The first silverware of the 2024 season was handed out at The Rectory on Sunday afternoon after Fox Lodge women and Brigade’s men’s team won their respective Derry Midweek League Charity Cup deciders.

The women’s final was first up as the Foxies took on Bready and it was the Magheramason side who set a target of 126-8 as they batted first. Mansi Bhavsar on top form with an excellent 55 not out while Jemma Rankin added 14 down the order and debutant Lucy McGranaghan 13 at the top.

Mollie Devine (3-13) and Tanisha Hussain (2-17) were best with the ball and Mollie was brilliant with the bat in the Ballymagorry girls’ reply as well.

The Dragons all-rounder made 55- sharing in a century partnership with skipper Hannah McLaughlin who added 31- as Fox Lodge chased down the target with 6 wickets and an over to spare.

Result apart it was a day to remember for Mansi who then claimed all four wickets to fall as she returned figures of 4-21, and it was totally fitting that the umpires couldn’t split her and Mollie for Player of the Match, so decided to share it!

Brigade emerged on top from the second final after Andy Britton’s team saw off Ardmore by 24 runs.

Scott Macbeth has come flying out of the traps this season and his superb 81 from just 38 deliveries (6 fours, 7 sixes) was the main reason the Beechgrove side got to 164 all out.

Iftikhar Hussain added 28 from 11 and Marcello Piedt 15, while for the Bleachgreen outfit, Edrees (3-12) was the pick of the attack, with good support from Rachit Gaur (2-17) and Harry Zimmermann (2-28).

Ardmore’s reply started terribly with skipper Gaur and Dharm Singh both dismissed by Piedt in the opening over. although Edrees gave them real impetus with 48 from 21 balls (2 fours, 6 sixes).

Zimmermann chipped in with a composed 38 to keep the champions interested, but Piedt (3-32) and skipper Britton (3-33) ensured Brigade got over the line with a bit to spare.
