Bonds Glen claim Championship title win

Bonds Glen wrapped up the 2022 Championship at their picturesque home ground on Saturday afternoon after claiming the points in a monumental run chase against Ballyspallen.

It’s something the Bee Gees have become quite adept at, but even for them, this was some effort on a perfect afternoon weather-wise at Kildoag.

‘Spallen were still in with a chance of winning it themselves and Demith Perera certainly found conditions to his liking as he smashed 16 sixes and 12 fours in an 84-ball 165 not out; an innings that set the tone for the contest.

Stuart Kennedy added 59 (4 sixes, 3 fours), Stephen McCloskey 35 and Stephen Kennedy 27 as the visitors racked up 318-4 in their 40 overs; Gordon Cooke (2-40) the pick of the home side’s attack.

The runs were shared around as Bonds Glen set about the chase and they still had more than two overs to spare at the heel of the hunt.

Steven Barr top scored with 95 (14 fours, 1 six) while Raymond Curry hit 65 (11 fours), David Cooke 61 not out (12 fours), Heinrich Roberts (39) and Mattie Barr (35) as the won comfortably.

This is the Bee Gees’ second Championship success- the last one some 12 years ago- but they’re a club who are certainly heading in the right direction, on and off the field.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved and a formal presentation is being arranged with the club at the earliest opportunity.
